Zoledronic Acid

Zoledronic acid is in a class of medications called bisphosphonates and is indicated to treat Paget’s disease. It works by slowing bone breakdown, increasing bone density, and decreasing the amount of calcium released from the bones into the blood.

The name brand of this medication is Reclast and is indicated to prevent postmenopausal osteoporosis, increase bone mass in men with osteoporosis, treat and prevent glucorticoid-induced osteoporosis and Paget’s disease in men and women.

For oncology patients it is known as Zometa and is indicated to treat hypercalcemia related to malignancy, patients with multiple myeloma and patients with documented bone metastases from solid tumors.

Your doctor may prescribe or recommend a calcium supplement and a multivitamin containing vitamin D to take during your treatment. You should take these supplements every day as directed by your doctor.
